Easter egg painting is a wonderfully creative tradition! It gets us in a crafty mood where we can express ourselves with funky colors, patterns, and textures. The only drawback is that things can get a little messy. To fix that, the Glitter Girls are sharing their top 5 easy ways to decorate Easter eggs! No dye, no paint, no mess, and no stress!

Use these Easter egg DIYs on artificial or hard-boiled eggs. With real eggs, grown-ups may want to give them a base coat of color, first. (Scroll down to see how we use food coloring to give Easter eggs a beautiful solid color.)

Here are 5 easy ways to add some razzle-dazzle to your Easter eggs!

1. Glitter Eggs

We just had to include this one! Glitter makes Easter eggs sparkle so beautifully, and it adds dazzle to Easter hunts or gift baskets. First, pour some glitter into a bowl. Then, using a paintbrush, carefully add a layer of water-based glue to an egg. For an even simpler method, try using a glue stick. Finish by rolling the egg in the bowl of glitter. Amazing!

2. Bejeweled Eggs

Grab some rhinestone stickers and get creative! This Easter craft for kids gives Easter eggs some real pizzazz. Just stick a few rhinestones onto your Easter eggs to give them a magical twinkle. Or cover them completely to make them look like big, rare gems! Using plastic eggs can really make this new toy last.

3. Temporary Tattoo Eggs

Temporary tattoos? On eggs?! Who’d have thunk that this would work? To do this, simply follow the same instructions you would use on your skin: place a temporary tattoo onto an eggshell, then gently press on it with a wet sponge for 30 seconds. Butterflies, flowers, unicorns, bunnies – the sky’s the limit!

4. Permanent Marker Eggs

Easy-peasy, lemon squeezy. The GG crew loves this DIY because it lets them be as creative as they want! Bring out some colored permanent markers and let kiddos design their own eggs. Think zigzags, spirals, polka-dots, and happy faces. There are no wrong answers with this one!

5. Washi Tape Eggs

Washi tape is a kid-friendly craft adhesive that comes in all kinds of colors and patterns. It’s easy to cut, tear, reposition, and even write on to suit your crafty needs! Simply add washi tape to your Easter eggs to add a little flair. Make stripes, cover the eggs entirely, or use a hole puncher to make stick-on polka dots!

How to Color Eggs with Food Coloring

Looking for an easy base color? With this DIY, all you need to do is soak hard-boiled eggs in a mixture of very hot water, white vinegar, and food coloring.

  1. Fill a jar with ½ a cup of boiling water, then add 1 tsp. of white vinegar or lemon juice. This will help the color penetrate the eggshells.
  2. Mix in 10-20 drops of the food coloring of your choice.
  3. Carefully place your hard-boiled eggs into the colored mixture and let them soak for about 5 minutes.
  4. Remove the eggs from the jar, then place them on a cooling rack to dry. Voilà! Colorful Easter eggs, ready to be jazzed up with glitter, stickers, and other pretty decorations.
