Summertime calls for sparkling adventures! It’s a time to play under the sun and make sensational memories that last a lifetime. Playing outside has all kinds of health benefits for kids and grown-ups alike, plus it enhances the play experience!
From trampolines to sidewalk chalk, we all know the classics – but did you know that dolls can go outside, too? Here’s how to add more sunshine to your kiddo’s doll-tastic routine, as well as easy ways to keep their dolls fresh and sparkling.
Tips for Taking Care of Dolls
Whether you’re visiting family abroad, going for a dip at the beach, or just hangin’ out at home, your child’s favorite dolls may get a little worn out over the summer. Or, as we like to call it: sun-kissed. To avoid any damage, follow these doll care tips to ensure that your fabulous Glitter Girls friends are well cared for.
- Brush doll hair regularly. For fussy knots, try spritzing a little water into the hair before combing. Separate it into sections and comb the bottom, working your way up to the roots. Find more doll hair care tips here and hairstyles here!
- Spot clean dolls with a damp cloth. Avoid dunking them in water as this may cause moisture to build up inside the doll, leading to mold. If you need to disinfect, opt for a disinfecting wipe, and let the doll dry completely before playtime.
- Wash doll clothes by hand, using a mild dish soap or laundry detergent. Dry completely before putting the clothes back on the doll. The best way to dry doll clothes is by sunlight, which not only dries but helps to naturally disinfect!
- Store dolls in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight. UV rays can cause colors to whiten, fade, and yellow over time, while moisture may cause mold. A handy way to store dolls is to keep them in bins and organizers that face away from any windows.
- Bring dolls indoors before the end of the day. Morning dew and excess sunlight may cause damage, while spending the night inside will reduce the risk of getting lost.
6 Ways to Play with Dolls Outside
Now that we have doll care covered, let’s take playtime outside! Spending more time outside is super-duper good for mental health, helping us feel calmer and more focused – so we can sparkle brighter! What’s more is that it fosters creativity, curiosity, and critical thinking. Add a little sunshine to everyday play with these outdoor playtime ideas.
Play Archeologist
Hide little toys – like dinosaur eggs – in a sandbox or a sensory bin. Then, give your kiddo scoops and brushes for their dolls to explore with. To make a sensory bin, simply fill a shallow container with colorful pebbles, aquarium gravel, uncooked rice, or any mixture of small objects, and decorate to your heart’s desire.
Chill Poolside
(Psst – with this idea, you don’t need a pool.) Fill a sealable bag with water and take it outside, so your child can pretend that their dolls are soakin’ up the sun. To make it extra magical, fill the bag with blue glitter, foam seashells, and other sensory goodies you can find at the craft store. Cruise the Bike Lanes
Got a bicycle basket? Bring a Glitter Girls doll with you on your next trail ride! You can also encourage your child to bring their favorite doll on your next hike or walk around the neighborhood. Just strap them into any backpack – so long as they can see! Having their bestie with them makes the activity that much more fun.
Go Camping
Does your child like to pretend that their dolls are outdoors? Why not set the scene in real life? Allow your kiddo to bring a playset outside, such as the GG Camping Set, and have their dolls play out their scenarios en plein air. If you’ve got a garden gnome, let them join in the fun, too! And don’t forget GG horses!
Have a Photoshoot
A great game for sightseeing, this kids’ activity mixes electronic devices with outdoor fun. Or, for a screen-free approach, grab a disposable camera! All your kiddo needs to do is snap pictures of their doll while she is out and about on vacation or in the backyard.
Go on a Scavenger Hunt
The Glitter Girls love this fun summer activity. Scavenger hunts bring fresh air, exercise, and problem-solving all together into one dazzling combination. Have your kiddo bring their Glitter girls doll along for the next one and try getting the doll involved in your own DIY version. Here’s how to make a scavenger hunt!
So, why choose between doll time and outdoor play when you can do both? The Glitter Girls absolutely love to have outdoor adventures! Just make sure that they come back indoors when it’s bedtime.
